Lightning can
strike any place or any time. Lightning can strike ten miles from the storm,
and fifteen miles from a cloud. You can count to see how far away a storm is
(15 seconds 3 miles away, 30 seconds 6 miles away). There is dry lightning
too. Dry lightning is when lightning comes from a cloud and makes no rain. Lightning is a big charge of electricity that can reach
from clouds to the ground. It
can start fires and it can kill or hurt people. Lightning also helps by
putting nitrogen in the ground for plants. Lightning is really dangerous. Every
year about 100 people are struck by lightning. Lightning kills more people than
hurt. Some of the people that are still living that got struck by lightning
will be hurt for the rest of their life. There are a lot of lightning strikes
every day. Sometimes you can feel
when lightning is going to strike.
If you feel strange you know that you are in danger. Lightning can strike any second. You can tell how far lightning is
away. This is how; count how many seconds until lightning strikes. Five
seconds is one mile away, ten seconds is two miles away. You just add one for
every five seconds. You would still count when the thunder comes too.
Lightning can go from the clouds to the ground. When
you get hit by lightning it fells like your foot went to sleep but a lot
stronger. The pain is in your foot for an hour. Your legs will tingle for
thirty minutes.
