Richland Center Primary School is now home to an exciting addition: a state-of-the-art book vending machine courtesy of the Schreiber Foundation. The machine operates with special tokens, making it an innovative way to promote reading among students. Its unveiling last Thursday was met with cheers and applause from students. Students receive a token on their birthdays or can earn one as a Hornet Way winner or as a prize in the new RCPS Rock Star Reader program. Rock Star Readers will be identified in each classroom each month, an award extended for showing a dedication to reading, including greatest improvement, willingness to try to read consistently, or being a diligent reading student. These programs will be combined with the Richland School District’s “Read Across the Hive” initiative, in which every student and adult in the district set aside 30 minutes each week for reading (including food service, maintenance, office staff, and more!). This creative incentive system aims to foster a love for reading among the school's young learners. The machine offers a diverse selection of books in English and Spanish, catering to various reading levels and interests. Both the machine and books inside it were donated by Schreiber. Principal Amy Hardy and IMC Director Heidi Meyer expressed gratitude for the generous donation: "I never thought we would be able to find a way to fund a book machine for the school, but I am so thankful for the way the Schreiber Foundation supports our community and schools to make things like this happen! Seeing the joy and excitement in the students' eyes these last days as we have revealed the machine and they have been able to see the books, watch them drop, and know the books are theirs to keep forever, just proves that this machine is about more than just getting books in the hands of students, but it is also providing excitement and thrill around books and reading, which is the foundation of learning."
